The Craftsmanship Process
The meticulous process of creating handcrafted wood furniture begins with the careful selection of timber. From humble beginnings in their backyard to establishing their own furniture store, the partnership between Douglas Chikukwa and Peter Story embodies the craftsmanship of Timber Furniture Design. Both founders began honing their skills at a young age, showcasing their dedication and passion for their craft. Every company has a story, and as we delve into theirs, we see their pride in their journey. After five years of working together in previous roles, the collapse of their company presented a pivotal moment that inspired them to create their own furniture store.Watch our story here: Video Link
Where Did Our Journey Begin?
Douglas and Peter's love for woodworking and carpentry ignited early in their lives. We asked them about their beginnings in Timber Furniture Design, and their stories reveal their deep-rooted passion for the craft.Douglas Chikukwa shares, "I fell in love with carpentry at a young age. By the time I started primary school in 1993, it was the only thing I wanted to pursue. I continued my education with practical work in high school and completed a carpentry course around 2005. I truly believe I was born for this."Peter Story reflects on his journey, saying, "I developed a passion for woodwork at 13, inspired by my father, who was a carpenter. I worked alongside him to create benches and stools. When I moved to Cape Town in 2008 at 20, I found a carpentry job in Woodstock, where I met Douglas. Under the guidance of our boss, Eddie Thompson, I honed my skills and became one of the youngest and best carpenters in the workshop."
The Emergence of Timber Furniture Design
In 2014, we started with just two employees. Today, we have turned our dream into a reality with a team of seventeen. Launching our company was challenging, especially in securing capital, but we have grown and are committed to giving back to the community by training young carpenters. “We believe that investing in the youth will create a brighter future,” says Peter. Currently, we have three students in training, on their way to mastering carpentry. We prioritize our employees' well-being, ensuring they are happy and well-supported. Many have even built homes using materials from our company. We want our team to thrive and achieve their personal goals.
Overcoming Challenges
Douglas recalls, "In the beginning, we worked in the backyard of my rental home, but the noise from our machines led to complaints from neighbors. Despite this, we persevered and eventually secured a small workshop, for which we were grateful."Our biggest challenge was raising capital to start our business. We overcame this by creating unique products that attracted larger furniture stores. Transportation of wood from our suppliers to the workshop also posed challenges, but we implemented efficient logistics to ensure timely deliveries. Our commitment to quality craftsmanship and customer satisfaction has helped us build a strong reputation in the industry.
What Sets Us Apart?

It looks great in both small and large spaces, and it easily converts from a 6-seater to an 8-seater without crowding."

What Are Your Interests and Hobbies?
